‘Why don’t they want girls to go to school?’ I asked my father.
‘They are scared of the pen,’ he replied.

Malala Yousafzai got worldwide attention when she was shot. Isn't that sad? I didn't know about her before that. Despite been insert in a well know conflict -the conflict, not the whys- , there is a lot of things we don't understand about that war. In this context, the book achieves its goal to learn at least some facts and key players. Recent history like bin Laden and Benazir Bhutto. And Afghanistan.

Written in a unadorned style, this is not a novelization of her life.

Reseña: When your child strays from God

Relato corto nominado al premio nebula 2015. Lo pueden encontrar aqui

When Your Child Strays From God

by

Sam J. Miller

My rating:  3 estrellas de 5

My rating: 4  stars

“Feminism isn’t merely a threat to male privilege anymore. Now a woman’s right to biological self-determination is viewed as targeting not just the patriarchy, but the very existence of men.”

Aborto. Maternidad.

Interesante.

Genero: Horror. Fantasía oscura.

Dark and disturbing. Where 'we are what we eat' take a new meaning.

Cheesy and fluffy. I love it.

“I’ve found that having someone to watch your back helps you face down the terror,” he said softly.
“Yeah,” Cameron whispered. He closed his eyes and turned his head to press his ear against Julian’s chest so he could hear the thumping heartbeat.
“Preferably with a sniper rifle,” Julian couldn’t help but add under his breath.

Thought, this volumen seemingly contains the issues 1-5, my digital pdf copy ends at 79% (page 82), so I didn't get a conclussion. There is no covers nor transitions between them.

In season 3 of Orphan Black is mentioned: "abort Helsinki". That incident is described in this comic. When 17 year old Veera Suominem discover been secretely filmed by her 'uncle', before run away she dig the names of 2 other girls from his computer and start a searching without realizing this is more complicated and dangerous than she thought. /SPOILER---->As described before by Ferdinand and Rachel: six Leda clones terminated in Helsinki within 24 hours with 32 as collateral damage. <-----SPOILER.

The city of Klaar has never fallen. No enemy has ever made it across the Long Bridge or penetrated the city’s mighty walls. Even when a powerful invading army shows up at the gates, the duke and his daughter, Rina Veraiin, are certain that it poses little threat.

But they are cruelly betrayed from within and, in a horrific spasm of violence, the city is brought to its knees.
My rating: 2.75 inky

My bookshelves:  nobility, wizardry, magia, fantasia-epica, netgalley

Strange how honors and burdens are so often confused.

Rina is the would-be duchess in Klaar, when the supposed inexpugnable city is conquered by the Perranese a loyal help her to flee the city.

Let me get strait that this is not a YA book. There is a lot of sex and violence. The tone following the vicissitudes of Tosh -the deserter soldier and one of the others POV- in the city is really diferent, crude and more realistic, than the adventures following Rina traipsing in the wild searching for the wizards with no plan in her head.

Maybe is for really young kids, but that kind of humor it feel cartoon-ish to me.

I enjoy Percy Jackson books, but not the brothers Kane ones (specially Sadie, who keeps making fun of her brother for liking research and books in her eyes been boring).

Anyway, Setne wants to be a god. Not good. So they joined forces against him. Apart for some ideas -dispise really juvenile jokes- is not a good story.

A pity.
