Primero que nada: Me encanta la portada de esta novela :)
Bueno, no sé de dónde vienen esas
etiquetas de algunos de este libro como YA, porque los protagonistas
tienen uno 39 y la otra 36. Además, hay mucho sexo. Por si acaso.
April es una geóloga de 36 años, fanática de una serie de televisión llamada "Gods of the Gates" (una versión bastarda de Eneas tirada a Game of Thrones );
ella escribe fanfiction de la pareja Eneas/Lavinia y hace cosplay en
secreto. Después de 7 años, el programa está en la última temporada,
aumenta la especulación, y ella decide publicar una foto suya de cosplay
, mientras tomaba la decisión de dejar de esconder su yo de talla
grande, además del cambio de trabajo y de ciudad.
Cuando Marcus
Caster-Rupp, Eneas en el programa, ve algunos comentarios negativos en
Twitter, decide invitarla a una cita. Por supuesto, Marcus también tiene
un par de secretos propios.
Esta podría haber sido una linda
historia, sobre el abuso público y privado a los gordos, la autoestima,
las expectativas y los prejuicios. Sobre las máscaras, cómo nos protegen
y nos lastiman. Y, por otro lado, sobre los escritores del fandom.
Podríamos simpatizar con las peroratas sobre el casting incorrecto de
personajes, el cambio de los libros al medio audiovisual, el giro de los
arcos argumentales más allá del reconocimiento ...
Pero la
historia perdió la sensación liviana en alguna parte, permitiendo que la
rabia y la pena y el dolor fluyeran del autor hacia el libro. No lo sé,
pero se siente personal. Sobre padres que esperan ciertas cosas,
decepcionan a ambas partes y crean resentimientos. Acerca de las
relaciones con personas que terminan lastimándote mucho después. Y la
falta de comunicación.
Me gusta Marcus. Me gusta April.
Hay fan -service. Hay fandom. Se cumple la fantasía.
Sin embargo, de alguna manera falta algo. Buena idea pero desarrollo poco pulido.

Well, I don't know where those tags of this book as YA come from,
because the protagonists have one 39 and the other 36. Plus, lots of
sex. Just saying.
April is a 36 years old geologist, fan of a tv series named Gods of the Gates (a bastardized version of Aeneas going on Game of Thrones); she writes fanfiction in the ship Aeneas/Lavinia, and do cosplay in secret. After 7 years the show is in the last season, speculation rises, and she decided to post a picture cosplaying while taking the decition of stop hiding her plus size self, beside of change job and city.
When Marcus Caster-Rupp , Aeneas in the show, see the some bad comments in twitter he decides to invite her in a date. Of course, Marcus have too a couple of secrets of his own.
This could have been a cute story, about fat-shaming, and self-esteem, and expectations, and prejudices. Abut masks, how it protect us and hurt us. And, in the other hand, about the fandom writers . We could sympathize with the rants about the wrong casting for characters , the change of books to audiovisual medium, the twist of the argumental arcs beyond recognition...
But the story lost the fluffy feeling at some part, allowing rage and grief and pain pouring out from the author into the book. I don't know, but it feels personal. About parents expecting certain things, disappointing both parties, and creating resentments. About relationships with people that end up hurting you long afterward. And miscommunication.
I like Marcus. I like April. There is fandom, and fan-servie. BUT. Somehow something is missing. Good idea but unpolish development.

ResponderEliminarHe visto este libro por Goodreads y la verdad es que siempre me llamó la atención. No sé si los puntos negativos que mencionas me llegasen a molestar pero bueno, todo sería leerlo para saber.

Hola, lo mejor es que lo leas cuando puedas, a todos no nos apela igual un libro, y a veces no es el momento adecuado. Tiene sus puntos buenos y malos, pero a mi no me ha llegado. aunque aplaudo la portada y la protagonista por lo que representa.

ResponderEliminarAy, no conocía el libro, pero me suena haberlo visto por Goodreads o NetGalley. Qué lástima que se volviera así, porque la sinopsis suena buenísima :( además, tampoco está bueno que esté mal dirigido, porque por las edades de les protagonistas ya te das cuenta de que no es YA. Quizás, si se hubiese vendido como literatura "adulta", algunos reproches a la historia se podrían evitar.
