SINOPSIS: Peter Grant era como cualquier otro agente novato de la Policía Metropolitana de Londres hasta que recibió cierta información de un testigo ocular en un caso de homicidio. Nada digno de mención si no fuera porque dicho testigo resultó ser un fantasma. Ahora su día a día consiste en negociar treguas entre el dios y la diosa del Támesis y desenterrar tumbas en Covent Garden. Por si eso no bastara, un espíritu maligno y vengativo está sembrando el caos en Londres y el agente Grant está dispuesto a hacer lo que sea necesario para salvaguardar la paz de la Reina.

Peter Grant es un agente de policía en período de prueba, a punto de
que se le asigne un trabajo, y básicamente lo envían a ser policía de
escritorio. Su amiga y colega le dice que es porque él es un tipo que se
distrae fácilmente y no es tan bueno como ella. Sin embargo, la vida de
Peter (el hijo de una inmigrante africana y un músico de jazz) está a
punto de cambiar para siempre cuando ve un fantasma y se encuentra
vinculado en la investigación de un asesinato.
La habilidad para
ver fantasmas es lo que llama la atención del Inspector Nightingale, su
nuevo jefe, quien parece haberse quedado ejem bastante atrás en la
tecnologia. Pronto se revela que la unidad paranormal es el remanente de
otros tiempos, ha sido arrinconada en la casi extinción hasta que llega
Peter con lo que parece ser un resurgimiento de la magia en el mundo
moderno. Esto no le causa gracia a muchos como comprenderán , aun para
aquellos que estan al tanto del secreto. Peter tampoco esta muy
satisfecho con las explicaciones sobrenaturales y esto le inspira a
buscar una explicación más cientifica haciendo experimentos para buscar
como funciona todo esto de lo paranormal. De hecho, los fundadores del
Folly apuesto que lo aprobarian.
Por más que lo he puesto en su versión en castellano, lo cierto es que lei el original en inglés, de ahi las citas en ese idioma. Yo habia escuchado mucho de esta
serie, sin saber mucho de qué se trataba., y que ahora va por los 8 titulos más algunas hisorias cortas, y hasta tiene su serie de novelas gráficas. No esperaba que tuviera este
tipo de humor irónico que me apela. Peter trata todo con desparpajo: a
sí mismo, el trabajo policiaco, la vida londinense y la magia que
descubre que existe en la ciudad.
La historia por momentos tiene
visos de Gaiman, con una mitologia adaptada a ámbitos urbanos, y también
a Harry Dresden con un aprendiz de mago que da tumbos con más suerte y
poder que un plan establecido. Que Peter no tiene idea de lo que pasa la
mayor parte del tiempo ... funciona ... en su mayor parte, pero es
fuente de frustración cuando el lector se ve forzado a ir descubriendo
de a migajas de información los diferentes aspectos de este mundo. Sin
embargo, lo que no me cuadra, es como a Peter le sale este "talento
especial" de la nada, nunca menciona haber tenido 'presentimientos'
anteriormente o intuiciones ni nada-
¿Mencione que además hace guiños a Harry Potter? ;)

Peter Grant is a probationary constable dreaming to be detective, about to be assigned a Unit, but he's basically sent to be a desk cop. Her friend and colleague tells her that it is because he is a guy who is easily distracted and is not as good as her. However, the life of Peter (the son of an African immigrant and a jazz musician) is about to change forever when he sees a ghost and is linked in the investigation of a murder.
I had heard a lot about this series, not knowing much about what it was about. I did not expect him to have this kind of ironic humor that appeals to me; Peter treats everything with impertinence - himself, the police work, Londoners, and the magic that he discovers that exists in the city.

Towards the end of your probation you start applying for positions in the various branches, directorates and operational command units that make up the force. Most probationers will continue on as full uniformed constables in one of the borough commands, and the Met hierarchy likes to stress that deciding to remain a uniformed constable doing vital work on the streets of London is a positive choice in and of itself. Somebody has to be abused, spat at and vomited on, and I for one applaud the brave men and women who are willing to step up and serve in that role.

The ability to see ghosts is what draws the attention of Inspector Nightingale, his new boss, who seems to have been left behind in technology ...for a long time. It is soon revealed that the paranormal unit is the remnant of other times, having been cornered into near extinction until Peter arrives with what appears to be a revival of magic in the modern world. This is not amusing to many as you will understand, even for those who are privy to the secret. Peter is also not very satisfied with the supernatural explanations and this inspires him to look for a more scientific explanation doing experiments to find out how all this of the paranormal works. In fact, the founders of the Folly bet they would approve.
The story at times looks like Gaiman, with a mythology adapted to urban settings, and also Harry Dresden with an apprentice magician who stumbles with more luck and power than an established plan, plus a few nods to Harry Potter. That Peter is really clueless most time works ...mostly, but is a source of frustration when the reader is forced to discover from crumbs of information the different aspects of this world. But what doesn't add up, is how Peter comes out of this 'special talent' out of nowhere. He never mentions having had any previous feelings or intuitions or anything-
I hope to continue this series. I want to know more about Nightingale, the Folly, and of course about Molly .
And what's the deal with the cane?
